As peacefully as my night started off, nightmares drove back my momentary happiness. I woke up several times during the night with an overwhelming sense of entrapment and never-ending darkness. I’m not sure if it’s my nerves getting to me or my brain’s inability to shut off for the night, but the dark feelings refuse to leave me. Every time I woke up, my heart was beating faster than the wings of a hummingbird as I scrambled out of bed. Giving up on sleep, I pick up a book and spend the rest of the night reading. Just as the pink and orange hues from the sunrise creep into my room, I still can’t make my body relax.

Throwing my book aside, I decide to take a bath. Maybe the heat from the water will help me relax before training starts later this morning. Stripping off my clothes and lowering myself into the steaming water, I lean my head against the back of the tub and close my eyes.

After several minutes, I attempt to open my eyes to find that I am surrounded in darkness just like my dream earlier. Rubbing at my eyes, I try to force them open with my fingers. No matter how hard I try, the darkness persists. It’s within that moment that I realize my eyes are open, but the room is so dark that I can’t see anything. Uncrossing my arms from my chest, I outstretch my fingers to feel the edge of the tub. Moving my hands further into the space in front of me, I finally feel something. Its smooth surface is cold to the touch as I press my hands harder into it. The material begins to stretch and give way as the pressure from my fingertips increase. My heart sinks as I realize that this material I feel isn’t the edge of the tub, but of flimsy plastic. Quickly pulling my hands back to my body, I become cognizant that I no longer feel water surrounding my body. The liquid warm that surrounded me is now cold air.

Panic sets in as my arms and legs thrash against the dark material encompassing my body. Breathing rapidly, I try to center myself and remain calm. There has to be a reasonable explanation as to why it’s so dark and cold. Did the power go out? Where in the hell did the water go? Did I nudge the drain stopper with my toes? I need to get out of this freezing encasement. As I compel my hands to move against the barrier one last time, I feel it shrinking around me, pulling tighter around my body. “No!” I scream repeatedly. My airways constrict as I fight for every breath of air I manage to pull into my lungs. Growing weaker and weaker from lack of oxygen, I feel my life force beginning to fade. Just before I succumb, a bright light shines in my face. Is this Heaven?

Muffled sounds reach my ears as the light surrounds me.
